Year 4 Spring Term 2022

Now showing in the Y4D Cinema!

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Spring Term 2022

The children have had a lovely time this afternoon sharing their animations with each other.

Stand with Ukraine St. Helens

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Spring Term 2022

The children have been learning about making sacrifices and thinking of others during our RE topic. School children from all over our borough were invited to make donations of essential items in support of the ‘Stand with Ukraine St. Helens’ campaign. Our school community has been incredibly generous and donated many items for refugees from the current conflict. This act of charity shows empathy and support for those in need, which the Christian faith sees as an act of sacrifice.

Y4 Road Safety Workshop

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Spring Term 2022

As part of our PSHE topic Keeping Safe, both classes participated in a workshop with the St. Helens Road Safety Team this week. The children learnt all about the different crossings, which are the best way to cross the road, and how to do it safely when there is no crossing available. Our visitors were very impressed with the children's knowledge and they did really well with their quiz at the end of the workshop. Another challenge which the children excelled in, was using maps of the local area to explore how they can travel across our borough using cycle paths. Well done, Y4!

Y4 Art and History

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Spring Term 2022

As part of our history topic, we have completed the next stage of making our own Anglo-Saxon jewellery. After looking carefully at artefacts discovered at Sutton Hoo in the last century, the children designed their own cloak brooch incorporating symmetry, jewels and repeating patterns. This week, we have transferred our designs onto clay and had lots of messy fun learning a range of clay modelling techniques like scratching, smoothing and adding details to our clay. They will need a few days to dry and then we can complete the final stage by adding paint. Watch this space!

Y4D History

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Spring Term 2022

We continued exploring Anglo-Saxon times by looking at crime and punishment. The children used their knowledge of Roman law and order and how it changed after they left Britain in 410 AD. We learnt that some of our modern laws originated from Anglo-Saxon times but thankfully the process of trials and punishments are very different in modern Britain! We debated why trial by ordeal was unfair, but we could understand why they believed in them and adopted it across all the kingdoms. This afternoon, the children calculated how much wergild they would receive after being injured. It was lots of fun!

History artefacts

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Autumn Term 2021

The children in Year 4 have been fascinated as they have continued learning about Remembrance and the history of the World Wars. Today, we looked at artefacts from both World Wars. The children are excited to explore more when they will be Year 6 pupils.

Y4D Computing

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Autumn Term 2021

We have started our new computing topic, Logo, this week. The children were larning how to code instructions by playing a game on our playground 100 square. We then transferred these skills to navigate a maze on Purple Mash. Great job guys!

Y4D Remembrance

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Autumn Term 2021

This week, we have been learning about Remembrance Day and exploring the well-known poem by John McRae, In Flanders Field. The children then made a book mark to help them remember their gratitude and the true meaning of remembering others and their sacrifices.

Y4 Dodgeball

Steph Hill (stephhill) on: Year 4 Autumn Term 2021

This week eight children from Y4 went to Broadway Badminton Centre and took part in a Dodgeball Tournament. The children had a fantastic afternoon. They won some matches, drew some and lost some but always with a huge smile on their faces.
